Hepatitis…
World Hepatitis Day is
recognized every year on 28 July, in order to raise awareness of this deadly
disease. Different organizations all over the world use World Hepatitis Day to
inform and educate people about hepatitis and also what needs to be done to
strengthen the efforts to reduce it. Hepatitis is a disease caused by liver
inflammation and there are about 5 hepatitis viruses among which type B & C
lead to chronic disease in millions of people and these together are considered
to be the most common cause for cancer.
People all over the
world come close together on World Hepatitis Day to promote awareness by
raising campaigns about hepatitis and also to call for access to treatments for
the disease. A patient-driven and patient-led NGO called World Hepatitis
Alliance [WHA] was created earlier and they work with individuals and community
groups thereby providing knowledge about hepatitis to people. Information about
World Hepatitis Day is usually distributed by different social media platforms,
posters, newspapers and through the World Health Organization [WHO] website.
On World Hepatitis Day
the WHO aim to achieve the following objectives:
- To increase hepatitis prevention with a focus on promoting WHO treatment recommendations
- To improve funding in the fight against hepatitis
- To promote health coverage of hepatitis services worldwide
The WHO member states
are all set with a goal to eliminate hepatitis as a health threat by 2030 and
this time the national governments have signed up and have committed to the
goal of eliminating viral hepatitis.
